Pennsylvania Expands Gambling Offerings with New Casino Projects

In a significant development for the gambling industry, Pennsylvania is set to expand its gaming offerings with the launch of two new casino projects, marking a potentially transformative period for the state’s economy and entertainment sector. These projects, which are approved by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, aim to diversify the gaming activities within the state and are expected to create thousands of jobs and generate substantial revenue in tax dollars.

The two new establishments, Live! Casino Pittsburgh and Hollywood Casino York, are strategically positioned in the Westmoreland and York Counties respectively. These locations were chosen to tap into local markets that have shown a robust demand for gaming and entertainment services, as well as to draw visitors from neighboring states.

Live! Casino Pittsburgh is a venture by The Cordish Companies and is set to feature over 750 slot machines, 30 table games, and a sportsbook, catering to a wide array of gambling preferences. The project is particularly notable for its adaptive reuse of the historic Bon-Ton department store space at the Westmoreland Mall, a move that merges modern entertainment with heritage architecture. In addition to gaming facilities, the development includes dining and nightlife venues, aiming to create a holistic entertainment experience.

On the other hand, Hollywood Casino York, operated by Penn National Gaming, will occupy the former Sears space at the York Galleria Mall. This project is designed to feature 500 slot machines, 24 table games, and a sports betting area. Similar to its Pittsburgh counterpart, the York casino is expected to drive significant foot traffic to the mall, benefiting surrounding businesses and revitalizing the local retail landscape.

Both projects have an emphasis on economic stimulation and community development. According to estimates provided by the developers, the casinos are expected to create approximately 1,500 jobs during the construction phase and another 2,000 permanent jobs once operational. Additionally, these new facilities are projected to generate millions in annual tax revenue, providing a substantial boost to state and local coffers.

The decision to expand gambling facilities comes at a time when Pennsylvania is experiencing significant growth in its gaming sector. According to recent reports by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, the state’s gambling revenue hit a record high in the last fiscal year, with contributions from slot machines, table games, and sports betting. The introduction of these new casinos is seen as a strategic move to capitalize on this upward trend and to position Pennsylvania as a leading gaming destination in the Northeast.

Governor Tom Wolf has expressed support for the expansion, highlighting its potential to enhance tourism and economic activity in the state. “These projects will not only transform unused spaces and help revitalize local economies, but they’ll also bring entertainment options that attract visitors from across the region,” said Governor Wolf in a recent press statement.

As these projects move forward, they also bring attention to the broader implications of increased gambling facilities, including concerns related to gambling addiction and societal impacts. In response, the developers and state officials have pledged to implement robust responsible gambling measures and to fund community outreach programs aimed at promoting healthy gambling habits.

The launch of Live! Casino Pittsburgh and Hollywood Casino York is set for late 2023, with both properties currently in the final stages of construction and staffing. These developments represent a significant bet on the future of Pennsylvania’s entertainment and tourism sectors, promising to reshape the economic landscape of the regions they serve.
