Spain’s Online Casino Market Drives Continued Growth in Gambling Sector

In 2025, Spain’s online gambling industry continued its upward trajectory, with significant contributions from the online casino segment. The General Directorate for Gambling Regulation reported a gross gaming revenue of €405.36 million in the third quarter, marking a 16.49% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Although this figure was slightly lower than the previous quarter, it still underscored the robustness of the sector.

Player engagement also mirrored this growth. Deposits saw an 18.19% year-on-year increase, while withdrawals rose by 16.82%. However, on a quarter-to-quarter basis, deposits experienced minimal growth at 0.03%, whereas withdrawals showed a more noticeable rise of 2.7%.

Gambling operators in Spain heightened their marketing efforts last year, despite a slight decrease in expenditure from the previous quarter. The total marketing spend reached €154.84 million in Q3, a 17.89% rise from the same timeframe in 2024, yet a 6% decline from Q2. This investment spurred new account sign-ups, which increased by 6.82% year-on-year, though they saw a 2.7% drop compared to the preceding quarter.

Promotional activities also surged, with spending jumping 23.47% to €82.03 million. Out of this, €28.57 million was allocated as bonus prizes, and €53.46 million was channeled into offers not tied to prize funds. Affiliate marketing saw substantial growth, with spending up nearly 20% to €15.86 million, and advertising expenditures expanded by 8.42% to €54.65 million.

The online casino segment stood out as a dominant force, accounting for 56.98% of the total online gambling revenue in Q3 2025, with earnings of €230.97 million. Slots played a pivotal role, experiencing a 27.78% year-on-year rise and an 8.54% increase from Q2. While traditional roulette faced an 8% decline and blackjack dipped by 3.22%, live roulette bucked the trend with a 4.2% increase.

The betting category represented 36.88% of the overall market. It grew 10% year-on-year but experienced a 13.02% decline from Q2. Fixed-odds sports betting saw a sharp fall of 42.98%, but live betting climbed significantly by 32.82%. Other fixed-odds wagers also rose by 23.85%, though horse racing faltered, slipping 9.07%.

Poker, encompassing just over 5% of the market, showed positive trends with growth on both quarterly and yearly bases. However, Bingo continued on a downward path, posting double-digit declines in comparison to 2024.

The gambling industry in Spain remains a topic of evolving dynamics and spirited discussions. On one hand, the impressive growth figures and increased player engagement reflect a thriving market that continues to captivate a broad audience. There’s a sense of optimism in the air, with some believing that this growth trajectory will maintain its momentum, driven by technological advancements and innovative gaming experiences.

Yet, there are voices of caution within the industry. Some experts argue that the heavy reliance on online casinos, particularly slots, could expose the sector to volatility. They suggest that diversification, both in terms of game offerings and marketing strategies, could be crucial to sustaining long-term growth. Moreover, regulatory changes loom as a potential challenge, with the possibility of stricter measures that could impact marketing practices and player acquisition strategies.

As operators navigate these dynamics, the emphasis on responsible gaming is becoming increasingly pertinent. The industry is keenly aware of the need to balance growth with ethical practices, ensuring that player welfare is prioritized amidst the competitive push for market share.

Looking ahead, the Spanish gambling market is poised at a crossroads. With technological innovations like virtual reality and AI-driven gaming on the horizon, the potential for further transformation is immense. However, the path forward must be charted carefully, with a strategic focus on sustainable growth and responsible gaming. This balance will be key to not only maintaining the current momentum but also ensuring the long-term health and viability of Spain’s burgeoning online gambling sector.
