What a wagering requirement is
A wagering requirement is the total amount you must stake before bonus money, and anything won with it, can be withdrawn. It is written as a multiple, such as 40x. It is the single most important number in any bonus offer and it is the one most often glossed over in advertising.
The calculation
If you receive a €15 no deposit bonus with 40x wagering, the requirement is on the bonus amount:
€15 × 40 = €600 in total stakes
That does not mean you need €600. It means the sum of every bet you place must reach €600 before a withdrawal unlocks. At €0.50 per spin that is 1,200 spins.
Deposit bonuses are often worse, because some operators apply the multiple to bonus and deposit. A €100 deposit with a €100 bonus at 35x on both is €7,000 in stakes, not €3,500. Always check which basis applies.
Why most no deposit bonuses do not pay out
The honest arithmetic: a typical slot returns around 96% over the long run. Turning over €600 costs roughly 4% of that in expected losses — about €24 — against a €15 bonus. The wagering requirement is designed so that, on average, the bonus balance is gone before it is cleared.
That does not make no deposit bonuses pointless. It makes them what they actually are: a free chance at a low-probability win, and a risk-free way to test an operator. It does mean you should never treat one as expected income.
The terms that matter as much as the multiple
Maximum cashout
Most no deposit bonuses cap what you can ever withdraw, commonly at €50 to €100. If you turn €15 into €400, and the cap is €50, you withdraw €50. The rest is removed. A 30x bonus with a €50 cap is often worse than a 45x bonus with no cap.
Maximum bet during wagering
Usually €5 per spin or hand. Breaching it even once, even accidentally through an autoplay setting, is grounds for voiding the whole balance at most operators. This is the single most common reason players lose bonus winnings.
Game weighting
Not every game contributes equally. Typical weighting:
- Slots — 100%
- Roulette — 10% to 20%, sometimes excluded
- Blackjack and video poker — 10% or 0%
- Live dealer — frequently 0%
At 10% weighting, €600 of wagering becomes €6,000 of actual blackjack stakes. Low-edge games are weighted down precisely because they are better for the player.
Expiry
No deposit bonuses often expire within 24 to 72 hours. Anything unwagered at expiry is removed along with winnings derived from it.
How to compare two offers properly
Rank by what survives the terms, not by the headline:
- Work out the total stake required — bonus × multiple, or (bonus + deposit) × multiple.
- Check the maximum cashout. This is your realistic ceiling, not the amount you win.
- Confirm the games you intend to play count 100%.
- Check the max bet rule and stay well under it.
- Check expiry against how much time you will realistically have.
A €10 bonus at 25x with no cap beats a €50 bonus at 60x capped at €50 almost every time.
Questions worth asking support first
Before claiming, ask live chat: is the wagering on bonus only or bonus plus deposit; what is the maximum cashout; what is the maximum bet during wagering; and does the bonus expire. Get the answers in the chat transcript. If support cannot answer clearly, that is itself the answer.
