Three Indicted Over Fake Bomb Robbery of Utah Credit Union

Indictment Filed for South Salt Lake Robbery

A federal grand jury has indicted three individuals for the September 4, 2026, robbery of an American First Credit Union branch in South Salt Lake. The charges stem from an incident in which Fidel Ybarra entered the financial institution and presented a device designed to resemble an explosive to a teller, demanding cash.

According to court records, Ybarra passed a note to the teller requesting money and warning of the presence of an explosive device in his bag. He then unzipped the bag to display the fake device. The teller complied with the demand, handing over $1,234. Ybarra then fled the scene in a Dodge Durango driven by Brelyn Sanchez.

Alleged Casino Debt Motive

Prosecutors stated that Ybarra confessed to the robbery and provided a specific motive: the settlement of a debt owed to Thomas Domingo Bustos. Ybarra told investigators that Bustos had accused him of owing $19,000, a sum allegedly accumulated at a casino in West Wendover, Nevada.

Ybarra stated he agreed to commit the crime to settle this debt with Bustos. Following the robbery, Ybarra indicated that Bustos took the $1,234 stolen from the credit union. Ybarra also told investigators that he felt forced into the act by Bustos, citing threats made against his family.

Conflicting Accounts and Evidence

Bustos and Sanchez entered not guilty pleas on Friday, October 2. Sanchez, who is alleged to have served as the getaway driver, stated to authorities that she had no knowledge of the plan to rob the credit union. Prosecutors noted that Sanchez informed them Ybarra owed $9,000 to Bustos, a figure that conflicts with the $19,000 amount Ybarra cited.

Despite the not guilty pleas, prosecutors placed Bustos at the scene of the crime. Evidence cited by the prosecution includes pinning Bustos’s red BMW near the credit union and cellular location data indicating his phone was in the area during the time of the robbery.

Legal Proceedings

All three individuals face one count of credit union robbery under federal law. The case highlights the intersection of gaming-related financial disputes and violent crime, with the alleged debt incurred at a Nevada casino serving as the central motive for the theft in Utah.

Why It Matters

The indictment links a violent crime in Utah to a financial dispute originating at a casino in West Wendover, Nevada. For operators and regulators, the case underscores the potential for off-premises criminal activity to stem from gaming-related debts. The discrepancy between the alleged debt amounts reported by different suspects may become a focal point in the upcoming federal trial.
