Macau gaming STRs rise 7.9% in first nine months of 2026

Gaming Operators Drive Reporting Volume

Macau gaming operators submitted 2,968 suspicious transaction reports, or STRs, between January and September 2026. This figure represents a 7.9 percent year-on-year increase from the 2,751 reports filed in the same period of 2025, according to data published by the Financial Intelligence Office of the Unitary Police Service on October 9.

The gaming sector remains the largest source of financial crime reporting in the territory. In the first nine months of 2026, gaming operators accounted for 71.7 percent of all STRs received by the office. While the absolute number of reports rose, this share declined slightly from 73.3 percent in the corresponding period of 2025.

Total Reports Up 10.3 Percent

Across all sectors, the Financial Intelligence Office received 4,138 STRs in the first nine months of 2026. This marks a 10.3 percent increase compared to the 3,752 reports received in the same period last year.

The office attributed the overall rise in reporting volumes primarily to increased submissions from gaming operators and other institutions. Gaming operators alone accounted for 217 additional reports year-on-year, contributing approximately 56 percent of the total increase across all sectors.

Other sectors also saw growth in reporting activity. Financial institutions and insurance companies filed 839 STRs, a 6.3 percent increase from the previous year. These institutions represented 20.3 percent of the total reports. The fastest percentage growth came from other institutions, which recorded a 56.1 percent rise in submissions, reaching 331 reports. Their share of total STRs increased to 8 percent in 2026, up from 5.7 percent in 2025.

Prosecutorial Referrals

During the first nine months of 2026, the Financial Intelligence Office forwarded 94 STRs to the Public Prosecutions Office. The data does not specify how many of these referrals originated from gaming operators versus other sectors.

The Unitary Police Service’s financial intelligence unit continues to monitor reporting compliance among licensed gaming operators, financial institutions, and other regulated entities in Macau. The published data provides a snapshot of reporting trends as the territory moves toward the end of 2026.

Why It Matters

The data confirms gaming operators remain the primary source of suspicious transaction reports in Macau, accounting for nearly three-quarters of all filings. The 7.9 percent rise in gaming-related reports, combined with a 56.1 percent surge from other institutions, signals broader compliance activity across the territory. With 94 referrals sent to the Public Prosecutions Office, the figures provide a baseline for operators and regulators to assess enforcement trends in the coming months.
