Agent Announces Legal Response to Deepfake Promotion
Nedal Huoseh, the agent for Canadian soccer star Alphonso Davies, stated that he intends to pursue legal action against the individuals responsible for creating a deceptive advertisement. The material, which appeared on Instagram, utilized artificial intelligence to generate a false endorsement involving Davies’ father for an unlicensed offshore gambling operator.
“The Davies family has nothing to do with gambling,” Huoseh said regarding the claims made in the video. He added that he plans to “go after the people who created the material.”
Instagram Video Features Fabricated Arrest and Endorsement
The advertisement was posted by an Instagram account identified as Prime Spin Zone. The video falsely depicted Alphonso Davies’ father being arrested by police in Edmonton, Alberta. The footage included scenes showing large amounts of cash, implying that the money was derived from gambling wins.
In a separate segment of the ad, a digitally created version of Davies’ father appeared, urging viewers to use the casino service. The promotion also reportedly included a deepfake of Canadian rapper Drake, a tactic intended to lend credibility to the unlicensed offer. Users who clicked on the promotion were redirected to Oxibet, an online gambling operator based in Comoros.
Oxibet Not Authorized in Alberta’s Regulated Market
Oxibet does not hold a license to operate within the regulated iGaming market in Alberta. The province launched its regulated online gambling market on July 13, a system specifically designed to shift players away from offshore operators and toward licensed platforms. There are currently 31 registered iGaming operators in Alberta, and Oxibet is not among them.
Licensed operators in the province must comply with strict advertising requirements. All marketing material for licensed operators must include the logo of the Alberta iGaming Corporation. Additionally, Alberta’s rules restrict the use of athletes in gambling promotions. Professional athletes are not permitted to directly promote gambling products in the province, although they may participate in campaigns that promote responsible gambling and player protection.
Regulator Warns Residents to Verify Operator Status
The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis regulator has warned residents to ensure an operator is authorized before using its services. This incident aligns with broader concerns raised by Canadian gambling regulators and industry groups, who have cited cases of fake casino promotions using the identities of well-known people, gambling companies, and physical casinos.
Deepfake technology allows for the production of believable video and audio that makes a person appear to endorse a service they never have. As the regulated market in Alberta expands with 31 registered operators, the distinction between licensed platforms and unauthorized offshore sites remains a critical issue for consumer protection.
Why It Matters
This incident underscores the regulatory gap between licensed Alberta operators and unlicensed offshore sites like Oxibet. Players risk using platforms that do not adhere to provincial advertising standards or player protection rules. The use of deepfakes involving public figures complicates consumer verification, making it essential for users to check the Alberta iGaming Corporation registry before engaging with any gambling service.
